‘Spring Awakening’

Join us at Rhoneymeade for our Spring Kick-off
Reserve Saturday April 25th, 11-3
At 11 am we will begin with a walk in our woods and be enriched with the wildflower knowledge of Terry Melton. She will guide us with our first tour this season and also look for evidence of wildlife, including our bluebird and swallow nesting boxes.

At 1 pm we will celebrate the challenges of reviving our old favorite, the American Chestnut tree. This trees vanished from our woods, a victim of an imported blight.
Professor Lake Grabowski from Penn State will share the college’s efforts to bring back the beautiful and delicious favorite. Lake has spent years on special breeding programs and leads the Northeast efforts as a member of the American Chestnut Tree Foundation.
We will follow Lake’s presentation with a special planting program to involve our Ar arboretum in the quest to return this old favorite to our region.

During the day our new veterinarian from Centre Hall, Diane Porter, will share pet care ideas.
She will particularly comment on the dangers of the tick problem and answer your questions.

We are also pleased to schedule volunteers from the Master Gardener program. They will lead our young gardeners in planting flowers to attract bees and butterflies to our backyards and will take home a special plant to start their garden.

We will also have available plants for sale to add color to your garden. We have particularly selected plants for their their ability to attract bees, butterflies , and hummingbirds.
